Joseph Simons

A highly-skilled classically-trained dancer with a passion for modern contemporary dance, Joseph has a special talent for creating original works that are impressive and engaging for dance connoisseurs, yet also entertaining and accessible to the broader public.
Named as “Dancer to Watch” by Rita Clark and Nina Levy in the Dance Australia 2007 Critics Survey, and described by former Artistic Director of the West Australian Ballet Simon Dow as showing great promise as a creator, Joseph is one of the most exciting new choreographic talents on the Australian dance scene.Originally from Dubbo, New South Wales, Joseph trained from the age of five in ballet, contemporary, tap and jazz under Jacqueline Manditch-Hoole and Anna Bloomfield at the Dubbo Ballet Studio. He is presently in his final year of the Advanced Diploma in Performing Arts (Dance) course at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA).
Joseph has choreographed many award winning group and solo works for Dubbo Ballet Studio, and has also choreographed for several musical theatre productions. He performed in the opening ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games and both the opening and closing ceremonies of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
Joseph represented WAAPA at the 2006 WA Ausdance Awards, performing his own original work “Bedroom Dancing”. In 2006, he was awarded the Leinster Dance Scholarship for “1st Year Dancer with the Most Potential” at WAAPA.
Joseph was invited to perform as a student guest with the West Australian Ballet in 2007, giving critically-acclaimed performances as Tweedledee, the Dog and the Knave of Hearts in Simon Dow’s “Alice”. He has just been offered a contract with the WA Ballet in their young artist program for 2009.
