Serena Chalker
Age: 23
Serena is the Director and founding member of AIVDT. A talented and intelligent choreographer, improviser and performer, Serena aims to increase the public awareness and appreciation of contemporary dance and the arts in Australia.
Serena began her training at The McDonald College where she studied as a scholarship student, then went on to complete a Bachelor of Arts (Dance) at WAAPA in 2008.Serena has a wide range of performance experience from across Australia ranging from the Sydney Opera House to the streets of Perth and everything in between. Most recently, Serena performed in Garry Stewart's 'Birdbrain', remounted by Anton (ex-ADT) at the Geoff Gibbs theatre and 'Don’t Look Back' directed by Tristan Sharp at the Perth International Arts Festival. She also worked on Alice Holland's work, 'Preparing to be Beautiful Chapter 2' in the STRUT season 'Prime Cut'. 2009 promises to be a busy year as Serena will be performing with the Fondue Set in the Sydney Festival First Night in 'Hoofer'. She and AIVDT will then undertake a 4 week intensive development of structured dance for public performance to promote dance with improvisational artist Jo Pollitt, before she heads off to Tasdance. She will also be performing with AIVDT in the fairbridge festival in Pinjarra in April.
Serena's choreographic interests lie in the contrast between the body's strength and extreme physicality and its emotional vulnerability. She has taught classes and choreographed for The McDonald College (North Strathfield, NSW), Sydney University, The Graduate College of Dance (Subiaco), Dance Star (Erskineville, NSW) and Methodist Ladies College (Perth). Her work 'On The East of Eden' performed at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts was described as 'intense' and 'compelling' by theprogram.net.au and was selected for study as a trial exam for WA secondary school students. Serena and Kate Herron then performed this work in December 2008 in Sydney at Dance Compass career development program for the top choreographers and reviewers in the country.
